Overview

The Machame Route is the most popular path to Kilimanjaro's summit for good reason — it offers the best acclimatisation profile, the most spectacular scenery, and consistently the highest success rates among the standard routes. Over 7 days, you pass through five distinct ecological zones: rainforest alive with Colobus monkeys, open moorland dotted with giant heather, the surreal alpine desert, and finally the Arctic summit zone where the famous glaciers of Kilimanjaro gleam in the morning sun.\n\nSummit night begins at midnight. You'll climb through darkness by headlamp, the cold sharpening the silence, the stars closer than you've ever seen them. At Stella Point (5,756m) you watch the sun rise over East Africa — and then push on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the roof of Africa. The descent covers the same ground in hours that took days to climb. Three days later you're back in Arusha, certificate in hand, fundamentally changed.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) for registration and pack inspection. Begin the climb through dense rainforest — alive with Colobus monkeys, hornbills, and the smell of moist earth. Arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m) after 5–7 hours. First night on the mountain.

Lunch Dinner

Machame Camp (3,000m)

Climb out of the forest zone into open moorland. The vegetation becomes dramatic — giant heather, lobelia, and senecio groundsel found nowhere else on Earth. Shira Camp (3,840m) sits on the remains of an ancient collapsed volcano crater. Views of the main summit cone begin here.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Shira Camp (3,840m)

The most important day on the mountain: climb high, sleep low. You ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch — feeling the altitude — then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m) for the night. This altitude stress and recovery is what prepares your body for summit night.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Barranco Camp (3,960m)

The famous Barranco Wall — a hands-and-feet scramble that sounds more alarming than it is. Your guides lead the way with practiced patience. Once above it, the views become extraordinary. Descend to Karanga Camp (4,200m) for a well-earned rest.

Karanga Camp (4,200m)

A shorter day — intentional. Arrive at Barafu Camp (4,673m) by midday, eat well, and rest completely. Your guide briefs you on summit night. Lights out by 7pm. Your alarm is set for 23:30.

Breakfast Lunch Early dinner

Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Midnight departure. Six to eight hours of slow, steady climbing in darkness and cold. At Stella Point (5,756m) the sun rises over East Africa in colours that defy description. Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the roof of Africa. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp (3,100m) — your legs will know it.

Midnight snack Breakfast on descent Dinner

Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Final descent through the rainforest. Collect your KINAPA summit certificate at Mweka Gate. Transfer to Arusha for hot shower, celebration dinner, and sleep in a real bed.
