Great Migration Safari
Overview
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where your guide meets you with a name board. Transfer to your hotel in Arusha for a welcome briefing, dinner, and an early night before the adventure begins.
Arusha hotel (e.g. Arusha Coffee Lodge or similar)
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park — home to Tanzania's largest elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. Afternoon game drive through the park. Tarangire is often overlooked but delivers extraordinary wildlife, especially in the dry season.
Tarangire camp (e.g. Tarangire Treetops or similar)
Drive to the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Descend 600m to the floor, home to 25,000 animals including the rare black rhino. Full day game drive on the crater floor with a picnic lunch beside a hippo pool.
Ngorongoro crater rim (e.g. Ngorongoro Serena Lodge or similar)
Leave the crater and drive into the vast Serengeti plains. En route, stop at the Olduvai Gorge — one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world where early human fossils were discovered. Afternoon game drive in the central Serengeti.
Serengeti central camp (e.g. Serengeti Sopa Lodge or similar)
An entire day in the Serengeti, following the herds wherever they've moved. Morning and afternoon game drives with a lodge lunch. Your guide will have tracked the migration movements and position you where the greatest concentration of wildlife is.
Central Serengeti camp
Drive north toward the Mara River — the site of the famous river crossings where wildebeest plunge through crocodile-infested waters. Position yourselves at the crossing points. These crossings cannot be predicted precisely, but patience is always rewarded.
Northern Serengeti (e.g. Migration camp or fly camp)
A full day at the Mara River crossings — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle in the world. Up to 1.5 million wildebeest cross this stretch of river during the peak season months. Your guide will identify the best crossing points based on herd movements that morning.
Northern Serengeti camp
Final morning game drive before a long drive back to Arusha. En route, take in the changing landscapes from northern plains back through the highlands. Arrival in Arusha in the late afternoon with time for souvenir shopping and a final celebratory dinner.
Arusha hotel
Morning transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. Your guide will accompany you to the airport and ensure a smooth departure. Karibu tena — welcome back soon.
