What to Pack for a Tanzania Safari: The Definitive Checklist

Packing for a safari is an art. Too much and you're lugging a suitcase across the Serengeti. Too little and you'll regret it at 5am when it's 8 degrees in the Land Cruiser. Here's what actually matters.

After years of guiding travelers through Tanzania, we've seen every packing mistake — and every brilliant packing decision. This is what actually matters.

Clothing

Neutral colours only — khaki, olive, sand, beige. Dark colours absorb heat and navy/black attract tsetse flies. Bring layers: early morning game drives can be surprisingly cold even in summer. A light fleece or softshell jacket is essential year-round.

Camera Gear

A telephoto lens of at least 300mm is essential — ideally 400–500mm for birds and distant predators. Bring plenty of memory cards and a dust-proof bag. Dust is relentless.

Health Essentials

Malaria prophylaxis (consult your doctor), DEET-based insect repellent, sunscreen SPF 50+, rehydration salts, any prescription medications in original packaging, and a basic first aid kit.

What Not to Bring

Bright colours, plastic bags (banned in Tanzania), excessive luggage (light aircraft have strict weight limits of 15kg), and anything you'd be devastated to lose.
