Kilimanjaro Success Rate: The Truth About Summit Day

The overall Kilimanjaro success rate is around 65% — but that figure masks enormous variation by route, duration, and preparation. Here's how to give yourself the best possible chance.

The most common question we hear from Kilimanjaro clients is: will I make it to the summit? The honest answer is that it depends heavily on which route you choose, how many days you take, and how your body responds to altitude.

Success Rates by Route

The Machame Route over 7 days achieves the highest success rates — typically 85–90% with an experienced operator. The Marangu Route (5 days) sees rates as low as 40% due to insufficient acclimatisation time. The Northern Circuit (9–10 days) has the highest success rate of all but also the highest price point.

The Single Biggest Factor: Duration

Every additional day on the mountain dramatically improves your acclimatisation and therefore your summit chances. A 7-day Machame versus a 6-day Machame can make a 20% difference in success rates.

How to Prepare

Begin cardiovascular training at least 3 months before departure. Day hikes with elevation gain are the most specific preparation. Altitude pre-acclimatisation (if coming from sea level) can help. And arrive in Tanzania at least 2 days before your climb begins.
