Great Migration 2025–2026: Where to Be and When
The annual wildebeest migration is the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth. Over 1.5 million animals follow an ancient circuit across Tanzania and Kenya. Here's exactly where to position yourself — and when.
More than 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle follow a seasonal circuit that has remained unchanged for millennia. Understanding this circuit is the key to witnessing it at its most dramatic.
January–February: Calving Season (Southern Serengeti)
The herds gather in the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro for calving season. Around 8,000 wildebeest are born every single day during peak calving — attracting every predator in the ecosystem.
March–May: The March North Begins
As the rains arrive, the herds begin their long march northward through the central and western Serengeti. Game viewing is still excellent but logistics require careful planning.
June–July: Western Corridor & Grumeti River Crossings
The first dramatic river crossings occur at the Grumeti River in the western Serengeti. Massive Nile crocodiles lie in wait. Camps here book out months in advance.
August–October: Northern Serengeti & Mara River Crossings
The most famous crossings — at the Mara River — happen repeatedly from July through October. This is the peak of peak season, and the most sought-after safari experience in Africa.
